Capture and Create

One of the most outstanding features of your device is the ability to take quality photos and videos. In this lesson, we'll learn:

  1. How to use the built-in camera

  2. Photo organization and editing tips

  3. How to preserve your precious memories

Besides taking pictures or videos, your iPad or iPhone camera is handy for all kinds of things:

  • Using it as a magnifying glass or a mirror

  • Capturing information about products

  • Doing a visual search on the Internet

  • Translating text from another language

  • Recording challenging events or situations

Since it's so helpful, it's crucial to be able to get to your camera quickly! Here's how:

  • Swipe left on the Lock Screen

  • Tap the camera icon on the Home Screen or the Control Center

  • Ask Siri to "Open Camera," or "Take a Picture," or "Take a Video"

Here are a few tips and exercises to start using your camera:

  • Tap the Shutter button, or press either volume button to take a shot.

  • Tap the circular arrow button to switch between the front and back cameras. Take a selfie!

  • Swipe left or right on the screen to choose different camera modes.

  • Turn off the Live Photos mode by pressing the button at the top right. We recommend only using live photos when taking group photos or a movement sequence.

  • Turn off Flash. It's only useful in a very limited circumstances.

  • Hold your phone in landscape mode for a wider shot.

  • Pinch the screen to zoom in or out. Tap anywhere on the screen to set a custom exposure and focal point.

View and Edit Your Photos

Open the Apple Photos App on your device. Try out the navigation icons at the bottom of the screen:

  • Library - view all your photos organized by date

  • For You - view your memories and shared photos

  • Albums - view albums you’ve created or shared

  • Search - search for photos by person, object, date or location

Try these steps to edit a photo:

  1. Tap a picture for a full-screen view

  2. Choose Edit

  3. Choose the effect you want to apply and swipe the slider to adjust the effect. You can also experiment with other more detailed editing controls including crop, exposure and colour.

  4. Tap done to Save

Sharing Your Photos

A great picture is always worth sharing! Your device provides lots of ways to share:

  • Easily share photos with other Apple users in the Messaging App.

  • Check out the Sharing Suggestions in the For You section of the Photos App.

  • Use the share button in the Photos App to choose from various sharing options.

Preserve Your Memories!

Photos and videos that you take are stored on your device. So, if something happens, you could possibley lose these precious memories.

If you sync your photos to iCloud Photos (Apple’s computers on the Internet), you will automatically have a copy stored online. Apple provides 5GB of free space for storing photos. If you exceed this limit, you can purchase more storage for a small monthly fee.

Alternatively, you could install Google Photos from the App Store and backup your photos to your Google Account. Google provides up to 15GB of free space shared between Photos, Email and Google Drive. To learn more about Google Photos, check out our tutorial on this topic!
